Project description: Thomas Burgon, 1787-1858, was a merchant who traded between London, Greece, and Turkey, and Smyrna in particular. He was also a connoisseur of Greek antiquities. During his lifetime he collected and documented over 300 artifacts, many of which are now in the British Museum. To document his collection he created watercolour paintings of his collections: these are now held by the Ashmolean Museum and are available online via this web site. This incarnation of the Burgon Archive Project was created by Alys Spillman as part of the Oxford University Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Archaeology. The Burgon Archive Project is not intended to be static, and will hopefully continue to evolve and grow as more people are able to contribute to the available knowledge of Thomas Burgon and his work.
