1. Introduction

The Digital.Humanities@Oxford Summer School (DHOXSS) 2012 takes places from 2nd - 6th July at the University of Oxford. DHOXSS delegates will be introduced to a range of topics suitable for researchers, project managers, research assistants, and students who are interested in the creation, management, or publication of digital data in the humanities.

Delegates will follow one of our 5 day workshops on:

Each day will also contain plenary guest lectures by experts in their fields, plus sessions on a wide variety of Digital Humanities topics. There will be morning surgery sessions to discuss projects and possibilities with tutors. The summer school is a collaboration for Digital.Humanities@Oxford between Oxford University Computing Services (OUCS), Oxford e-Research Centre (OeRC), with the assistance of the Humanities Division, the Bodleian Libraries, the Oxford Internet Institute, and e-Research South. The DHOXSS is organized by James Cummings and Sebastian Rahtz at OUCS and Erin Snyder at OeRC.

The Summer School will be located at Merton College, OUCS, and the OeRC, all situated in the centre of Oxford.

4. Delegate Joining Instructions

A printed booklet of DHOXSS material will be given to all delegates. There is no pre-reading or work that is needed for this summer school.

Location and Travel

Parking

Conference Registration Details

Conference Registration will be at Merton College. All morning sessions are at Merton College. A map of Merton is available along with a map of the DHOXSS sites.

On Monday 2nd July the registration desk will be open at Merton, in the T.S. Eliot Theatre foyer from 9.30 am. Please follow "Digital Humanities" signs.

The summer school will formally start at 10 am.

Accommodation

For those who have booked accommodation at Merton please go to the Merton College Lodge on Merton Street, and present yourself to the Porters. Check in time is from 3pm. The Lodge is open until 11.00pm every day, if you will arrive after this time please let the Porters know in advance by calling (+44) (0) 1865 276310 and when speaking to them mention the Digital Humanities Summer School.

Checking out time is 10.00am, please return your key to the Porters at the Lodge.

Luggage can be stored in the T.S. Eliot Theatre prior to check-in and after check-out. Storage of luggage can also be organised at OUCS on the final day if required. Please email us at to arrange.

Day Time Arrangements

The morning sessions will be at Merton, followed by a buffet lunch each day at Merton.

The lunch will cater for vegetarians and any special dietary requirements that you have notified us of. The afternoon sessions will be at OUCS and OERC and will start at 2 pm each day.

Please note: Merton is about a 30 minute walk from OUCS -- please bring a coat/umbrella in case of rain!

Evening Arrangements

Events have been arranged for 3 evenings.

The main banquet is taking place on the Wednesday evening at 7.00pm – booking for this event has now closed.

There are also two free drinks receptions, one on the Monday evening at Merton College at 7.00pm on the Sundial Lawn, the second is on the Thursday evening at 7.00pm at the Natural History Museum (http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/visiting/). We will send a separate email about this at the beginning of next week.

Computers, Laptops, and Wifi

All of the computer based course work will be done on individual Windows desktops in the OUCS teaching suite. However, if you want to bring a laptop as well, there will be power sockets available and wireless accounts will be made available. Please make sure you bring your power adaptor suitable UK power sockets.

There will be a password provided for free wireless use at Merton College, this password will be the same for the lecture theatre and also for the bedrooms if you are staying there.
