The Great War Archive

Project Description:

The Great War Archive contains over 6,500 items contributed by the general public between March and June 2008. Every item originates from, or relates to, someone's experience of the First World War, either abroad or at home. Contributions were received via a special website and also through a series of open days at libraries and museums throughout the country.

The original Great War Archive initiative accepted contributions until June 2008. Following the success of this innovative crowdsourcing model, the team behind the Great War Archive were funded to train other orgainisations in developing community collections online. Since 2011 the team have also been working with Europeana to run this initiative across Europe to build a significant public archive in time for the Centenary of the First World War. The Europeana 1914-1918 project has been receiving contributions and hosting roadshows in countries including Germany, Ireland, Luxemburg, Cyprus, Belgium and Slovenia, and will continue to do so in many others until 2014.
