Project Description:
The Ashmolean, Britain's oldest public museum, has one of the finest collections of ceramics in the world. The collections are wide-ranging, and include Ancient Egyptian, Nubian, pre-Islamic and Islamic ceramics, Ancient and Classical Greek and Roman pottery, Chinese Greenwares, Japanese export wares and Italian maiolica. The outstanding English material includes early Delftware, early Worcester porcelain and Staffordshire salt-glaze stoneware. PotWeb aims to create an online catalogue of the entire ceramic collection. When fully developed the online catalogue will be extensively illustrated and supported by a computerised database, bringing together the fruits of one hundred and fifty years of historical and archaeological research.Together these resources will form the basis of a wider interactive educational package with supporting resource packs. A new interactive facility will also be made available within the Museum for visitors and researchers.
