Project Description:
World War I Centenary: Continuations and Beginnings is an open-access online platform that provides materials for free reuse under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Sharealike Licence. Materials are presented through thematic collections to represent future directions in teaching First World War Studies, challenge existing misconceptions about the conflict, and reappraise the War in its social, cultural, historical and political context. Materials have been produced by some of most prominent academic and non-academic experts in the field alongside a team of student ambassadors, they include scholarly articles, short talks and lectures, ebooks, innovative computer models and interactive maps.
This resource is funded by the JISC World War One (WW1) Open Educational Resources (OER) Programme as part of the World War One Commemoration Programme, and is underpinned by the JISC ‘Statement of Intent’.
The project was a collaboration between the teams at the University of Oxford responsible for the First World War Poetry Digital Archive and the Great War Archive (funded under the JISC Content and Digitisation Programme), and the Oxford Open Spires, Triton, and Great Writers projects (funded under the HEA/JISC Open Educational Resources Programme Phases 1, 2 and 3). It thus brings together a wealth of experience from pedagological and content perspectives to create a unique and timely open educational resource that brings the people, events and places of World War I back into sharp relief for the benefit of education and research.
