Howard Hotson (Professor of Early Modern Intellectual History, University of Oxford) and Miranda Lewis (Digital Editor, Early Modern Letters Online) will discuss the Bodleian's invaluable card catalogue, the 'Index of Literary Correspondence', the library staff involved in its creation, and its recent digitization.
This is a story that spans almost ninety years and involves a small cast of remarkably dedicated staff and volunteers. Today the card catalogue (with information on nearly 50,000 manuscript letters) lies at the heart of Early Modern Letters Online (EMLO), an online epistolary union catalogue being developed in Oxford under the aegis of the Mellon-funded project Cultures of Knowledge.
The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.
