Cross-cultural Music Mood Recognition

Event type: Seminar

Music Information Retrieval (MIR), as an interdisciplinary area of research, has developed rapidly in the last decades. MIR research has been historically focusing on Western music and context, with few studies on issues and challenges related to non-Western music or users with a non-Western cultural background. In this talk, I will present a series of studies on cross-cultural music mood recognition, including comparisons of mood perceptions between listeners from different cultural backgrounds, and cross-cultural generalizability of automatic music mood recognition models. If time permits, I will also talk about user-centered evaluation on complete MIR systems.

Dr. Xiao Hu is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Information and Technology Studies in the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong. She has been studying music mood recognition and MIR evaluation since 2006 and won several international awards. Dr. Hu was a tutorial speaker on music affect recognition (2012) and a conference co-chair

(2014) in the International Society for Music Information Retrieval

(ISMIR) Conference. Dr. Hu obtained her Ph.D. in Library and Information Science and a Master's in Computer Science from the University of Illinois.

This seminar is open to all and will start at 2.00pm in the Oxford e-Research Centre Conference Room (room 278 - access available via 7 Keble Road).

Coffee and Cakes will be made available.
